CITY MARKET HISTORY & ART TOUR

DOWNTOWN SAVANNAH

Did you know that City Market was once only one wooden building where locals gathered for their groceries and services? Today it is the two-block area of Savannah where the local art community works its inspirations. Join LAA & City Market artist Betsy Slocum on an informative walking tour of City Market art and peek into the creative world of an award-winning sculptor, a Gullah basket weaver, an etcher, an enamellist, and a potter. Hear and see how each possess a vision brought to life through instructional content and demonstration. You'll also learn a bit about the downtown of years past through the eyes of a life-long, well-known local Savannah scene and architectural artist. We’ll break for lunch (at your own expense) at the recently renovated Belford’s Restaurant, located in a building designed in 1902 by the architect of Savannah’s gold-domed City Hall. Please note: this is a walking tour and requires climbing a set of stairs. Meet at the United Methodist Church on Skidaway Island at 10:00 AM if you wish to carpool. Tour begins promptly (rain or shine) at 10:30 AM in Ellis Square near the Johnny Mercer sculpture. Limited to 15 participants. Cost: FREE (lunch at your own expense).

Registration will begin on September 6 at 9:00 AM.
